THE Zimbabwe Football Association has mourned former Mashonaland United star Nevison Majuta Masunda who died in Bulawayo on Thursday.
Masunda died at the age of 101.
Masunda played for Zimbabwe Saints when it was still Mashonaland United from 1944-1953.
United changed to Zimbabwe Saints in 1975.
He played alongside the late former Zimbabwe Vice President Joseph Msika, a no-nonsense right-back.
In a statement on Friday morning Zifa wrote: The Zimbabwe Football Association joins the wider football community in mourning the passing of Nevison Majuta Masunda, who died in Bulawayo at the age of 101.
“A true pioneer of the local game, Mr Masunda played for Mashonaland and Southern Rhodesia during an era that laid the foundation for Zimbabwean football. He joined the legendary Chikwata in 1944 and lined up alongside notable figures such as the late former Vice President Joseph Msika, representing both club and Red Army – a select team that carried the hopes of Bulawayo in the prestigious Osborne Cup.
“Mr Masunda’s contribution to football and to the history of our nation will be remembered with deep respect. His longevity and legacy are a source of inspiration to generations past and present. Zifa extends its heartfelt condolences to the Masunda family, friends and the entire football fraternity. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Mourners are gathered at 155 Mahatshula.
His funeral service will be held on Friday afternoon (3pm) at the Donnington, Nyaradzo Funerals Branch.
