ZIFA president Philip Chiyangwa says the organisers of the Bob92 ZIFA Super Cup will not be allowed again to stage the tournament which is held annually to celebrate the birthday of President Mugabe. This follows cancellation of the tournament at the last minute. Highlanders and Dynamos were supposed to clash in the two-legged match starting with the first leg at Barbourfields yesterday and it was meant to be screened live on SuperSport.
The return leg was scheduled for National Sports Stadium this weekend. But on Saturday, former champions Dynamos pulled out of the tournament demanding the prize money from last year’s edition. Our sister paper The Sunday Mail quoted Dynamos chairman Kenny Mubaiwa who had no kind words for the organisers.
“We won the tournament last year but we did not get our prize money,” said Mubaiwa.
“Football is our business, football should make money for the club, not the other way round. The organisers rake in money from gate-takings because Dynamos would have lured the crowd but they do not want to pay us.” ZIFA have stepped in and said in future such important tournaments would only be handled by the Association so that they protect the name of the President. Chiyangwa even said if they get funds, they will host the tournament later this year.
