ZiG inflation falls

The ZiG month-on-month and year-on-year inflation for the month of May dropped by 0.6 percent and 0.4 percent in the May statistics released by the Zimbabwe Statistical Agency (ZimStat) this Tuesday.

The statistics were presented by ZimStat’s price statistics manager in a virtual presentation to various stakeholders.

“The ZiG month-on-month inflation rate was 0.5 percent in May 2026, shedding 0.6 percentage points on the April 2026 rate of 1.1 percent. The ZiG year-on-year inflation rate (annual percentage change) for May 2026, as measured by the all-items ZiG Consumer Price Index (CPI),

was 4.4 percent, shedding 0.4 percentage points on the April 2026 rate of 4.8 percent,” he said in his presentation.

Mr Chikadaya said the ZiG year-on-year inflation rate (annual percentage change) for May, as measured by the all-items ZiG CPI, was 4.4 percent, down 0.4 percentage points from the April 2026 rate of 4.8 percent.

The US dollar year-on-year inflation rate (annual percentage change) for May 2026, as measured by the all-items US dollar CPI, was 2.8 percent, up 0.6 percentage points from the April 2026 rate of 2.2 percent.

“The weighted month-on-month inflation rate was 0.4 percent in May 2026, shedding 0.7 percentage points on the April 2026 rate of 1.1percent.

“The weighted year-on-year inflation rate (annual percentage change) for May 2026 as measured by the all-items weighted CPI was 3.2 percent, gaining 0.4 percentage point on the April 2026 rate of 2.8 percent,” he added.

For May 2026, increases in the index were mainly observed in the food and non-alcoholic beverages division.
