Union, was formed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on May 25, 1963 with the objective of decolonising the continent pursuant to forming a Union government.
Among the drills witnessed by The Herald news crew at the National Sports Stadium yesterday, the venue of the mega event, displays to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the AU have been lined up.
Manyame High School will conduct displays to commemorate the day.
In their rehearsals witnessed yesterday, pupils from Manyame made a formation that depicted AU @50 in a captivating display.
The displays will be backed by music from the Zimbabwe Republic Police band.
There will also be displays of the country’s land reform programme that has transformed several people’s lives.
There will also be traditional dances.
This year’s independence commemorations will be held under the theme “Zimbabwe @33 Peace, Prosperity and Economic Empowerment for National Development.”
Various provincial capitals will commemorate the day to be presided over by provincial governors and Resident Ministers of respective provinces.
The provincial governors are expected to read the President’s speech.
The major event would be at the National Sports Stadium where the President, who is also Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces would preside over the event.

Chairperson of the national organising committee, Dr Ignatius Chombo said 30 buses were on standby to ferry people to the stadium.
“All parties have been told to mobilise their supporters. We are strict, we don’t want any violence. We are urging Zimbabweans to come in their thousands and to come in their plain clothes as no party regalia will be allowed,” said Dr Chombo who is also Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister.
MDC-T organising secretary, Mr Nelson Chamisa said his party was mobilising its supporters to attend the event.
“MDC is a major stakeholder and shareholder of this national event. It’s a settled principle that the MDC appreciates the sacrifices made by liberation fighters,” said Mr Chamisa who is also Information Communication Technology Minister.
“The content of independence can be debated but we are agreed on the principle,” he said.
