ZIMBABWE rugby sevens franchise chairman Donald Mangenje said preparations to host the Sevens Confederation of Africa Rugby Cup were on track. The two-day 7s CAR Cup tournament which kicks off next week Saturday to Sunday is expected to draw 12 countries Kenya, Uganda, Tunisia, Nigeria, Madagascar, Namibia, Botswana, Senegal, Zambia, Ivory Coast, South Africa and the hosts.

Mangenje said hosting the continental tournament meant Zimbabwe had gained noteworthy recognition in the sport.
He pointed out that the venue had, however, changed from Harare Sports Club to Prince Edward High School for logistical reasons.

“All the 11 participating countries have confirmed their attendance and we are currently processing visas and the necessary paperwork for all the participating countries.
“Our hosting of this tournament means that Zimbabwe has gained noteworthy recognition in the sport.

“So this is not only good news for ZRU, but for Zimbabwe as a nation,” he said.
Mangenje said selected squad for the Cheetahs (Zim 7s team) would be announced on Saturday and is expected to get into camp on Sunday.

The 7s summer series which ended last Saturday won by Old Georgians was used to select the country’s best players for the CAR Cup.
Mangenje, who expressed confidence in the Cheetahs to defend the title they won last year, said he was impressed by the improvements Zimbabwe’s 7s rugby was making over the past four years.

He said all the invited teams are expected to be in the country by next week Thursday.
Concerning the Ebola threats, Mangenje said there would be extra tests for West African countries and ZRU was working closely in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Child Care.

“Senegal, Ivory Coast and Nigeria have all been declared Ebola free, but nonetheless we are working closely with the Ministry of Health in terms of the Ebola guidelines,” he said.
