ZIMBABWE-BORN reggae artist, Melik “Don Dada” Gibbons, has signed a deal with Gallo Music, Africa’s largest independent recording label and music publisher.
The deal represents a groundbreaking move for reggae music in Southern Africa, with Gibbons becoming one of only two reggae artists to sign with a label of this size, the other being the late Lucky Dube.
Gibbons said his long journey and commitment has earned him the honour of signing with Gallo.
“I am now signed to Gallo Music and it’s historic across the African continent and beautiful to be associated with a major label.
“It’s beautiful for reggae music since there have not been major artists on major labels in Southern Africa.
“It’s an amazing thing since I have been in the industry since I was 13 years, and I am 36 years now.
“I push my music, produce and try my best to be outstanding.
“I think all those things matter most in this journey and this has earned me this milestone.
“I feel very excited, it’s history for reggae music, it’s my first time to work with such a big label and it’s a beautiful experience.”
He has since been nominated for the best diaspora artist at the Zim Hip-Hop Awards.
“It’s an amazing thing for any recognition for an artist since a lot of artists complain about not being recognised at home.
“I am looking forward to working with Zimbos.
“I will release a new album next month.
“It’s a story of my life which I have gone through as an artist.
“I have been accepted abroad and I am also loved in South Africa.”
