The Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development, Dr Joseph Made, said overall crop production had increased this season compared to last season.
“If the crops are not affected by the dry mid-season, hailstorm and armyworm, the yields will be better than last year’s,” said Dr Made.
Tobacco production has increased from the 43 000 hectares recorded last season to 65 000 hectares.
Maize production has so far recorded 660 000 hectares as compared to the 530 000 last season.
More hectares are expected to be put under maize as additional planting is still expected thanks to the incessant rains.
Sorghum farming has also increased with a record of 174 000 hectares being planted in comparison to the 110 000 hectares last season.
