ZIMBABWE yesterday joined the rest of the world in celebrating the International Youth Day.
In 1999, the UN General Assembly endorsed the recommendations made by the World Conference of Ministries responsible for youth, which had been held from 8 to 12 August 1998, that August 12 be declared International Youth Day.
It was noted that the day would give the world an opportunity to celebrate and mainstream young people’s voices, actions and initiatives, as well as their meaningful, universal and equitable engagement.
Commemorating the day, Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Kirsty Coventry said Zimbabwe celebrated the youths who have shown commitment to making the country a great place.
“As we commemorate this important day, Zimbabwe at 40 celebrates the youths who throughout generations have showed an insatiable hunger to make this country the great place it is, young people who know that there is still more that can be done and more that they can do to build Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe we all want,” she said.
“Our youth are vivacious, peaceful, confident, innovative, valiant, brilliant and decided.”
Minister Coventry commended youth for using the day to raise issues concerning their welfare through the media.
