KUDA The Choreographer believes he is achieving his dream of being an international brand.
Born Kudakwashe Makaza 30 years ago, the youthful entertainer made his international breakthrough when he choreographed Roki’s club banger, Patati Patata, featuring Congolese rhumba star, Koffie Olomide.
Kuda, who is the son of former Dynamos chairman Simon Makaza, reckons he has already fulfilled part of his mission.
“I have always loved dancing when I was young and I could dance to anything for fun before I realised I could become a choreographer.
“Largely self-taught, a friend of mine called Tapfumanei then helped me on some of the basics expected in this game before I made an international breakthrough with Patati Patata.
“From there, many big artists have been calling me to come and help them as a choreographer because I can dance and direct dancers as well,” he said.
The former Zengeza 2 High School student, who started off as a cricketer before he quit for dance, believes his focus has taken him places.
“As a young man, I tried soccer but I quit when my friend was injured during trials.
“I then decided to play cricket but I quit since I had a busy schedule as a choreographer.
“I specialise in wedding choreography, Zumba fitness, kids dance class, corporate events, branding awareness campaigns and overall fitness campaigns.”
Inspired by Zorro Nhira and Petit Afro from the Netherlands, Kuda has also worked with a number of household names.
“The Roki-Koffi collabo was the biggest project followed by another video featuring D’banj and Roki, which is due for release.
“By the way, D’Banj and Roki have collaborated on something and I am actually the one who did the choreography of its accompanying video.
“Back home, I assisted Freeman in the production of his video Madzinza as well as Ishan’s video featuring Nutty O titled Feelings. I was also the choreographer on Jah Prayzah’s video Boi Boi.’
Kuda is currently busy on an international tour.
“I started my international tour in February when I was invited to South Africa where I did wedding choreography on February 27.
“From March 31-April 3, I was in Dubai holding dance classes and wedding choreography.
“On the 6th of April, I will be travelling to China for another dance class before I proceed to Rwanda for another assignment from the 26th of May to the 29th.
“I also have another confirmed show in the UK from the 26th to the 28th of October, which makes it a busy schedule by any standards.”
For his exploits, Kuda also boasts of a number of accolades to his name.
“I was voted the Best Wedding Planner in 2022, courtesy of the Zimbabwe Wedding Industry Network.
“I was also voted the Outstanding Wedding Choreographer in South Africa, which shows that my work is being appreciated,” he said.
