THE Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC) yesterday hosted the International Day of the Girl Child aimed at ending child marriages in the country.

The launch of the event featured the presentation of a report on the national enquiry on child marriages in Zimbabwe.

It was attended by the Minister of Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises, Monica Mutsvangwa. Other organisations in attendance were Kwatswe Sistahood, Mwanasikana Wanhasi, Women Empowerment Network, Zimbabwe National Students Union and Female Student Network Trust.

Minister Mutsvangwa praised the ZGC for its efforts to achieve Vision 2030.

“Hakusisina vana tete mazuva ano, vana ngawadzidziswe kuzvikoro kwawanodzidza.

“Haurase mvura, mwana nedhishi racho, give these children an opportunity to learn,” said Min Mutsvangwa.

She said multi-media campaigns were launched and community radios were operationalised in various languages in support of ending child marriages.

The Ministry also handed over 16 cars to marginalised areas for speedy access to the site of any incidents of child marriage occurrence.

“The media disseminates the information to various individuals, so there is a need for factual information and objectivity. We are living no one and no place behind,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.
