“We are happy and confident as we mark the 25th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer, that, the once endangered ozone layer is recovering.  The recovery of the ozone layer will reduce millions of cases of skin cancer and eye cataracts saving billions of dollars in health care costs globally,” she said.
Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Management ozone project manager Gorge Chaumba said they had adopted a training programme for refrigeration technicians meant to equip them with knowledge and skills necessary to avert increased emission of ozone depleting substances.
“We have a training programme underway- Good Refrigeration Practices, where partakers are given knowledge that helps them prevent emissions of ozone depleting substances and hydro-chlorofluorocarbons when carrying out their operations. There is need to create a syllabus that includes the ozone layer to caution children of the effects of ozone layer depletion.”
World Ozone Day celebrations will be held on September 16 in Rusape.  The Montreal Protocol was agreed and negotiated on September 16, 1987 following scientific discoveries that man made chemicals were destroying the ozone layer.
