ZIMBABWE has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safe, orderly, and humane facilitation of migration for its citizens in the diaspora.
Speaking at the International Migrants Day commemorations in Harare yesterday, the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Kazembe Kazembe, underscored the importance of treating Zimbabweans abroad with dignity and respect in their countries of transit and destination.
International Migrants Day reflects on and celebrates the contributions of millions of migrants worldwide.
Minister Kazembe highlighted the positive partnerships between Zimbabwe and various foreign community organisations, particularly in areas such as police training, immigration services, and repatriation efforts.
“I am pleased to note that some business communities in Zimbabwe have generously assisted the Department of Immigration in repatriation exercises,” he said. “However, we recognise that this is a collective responsibility, requiring collaboration between Government, the private sector, civil society and international organisations.”
He also acknowledged the significant contributions of migrants to Zimbabwe’s development, citing the success of athletes like Sikandar Raza as a testament to the benefits of well-managed naturalisation processes.
International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Director-General Ms Amy Pope echoed the same sentiments.
“Migrant rights are human rights,” she said. “Today, we celebrate the invaluable contributions that migrants make to their communities of origin and destination.”
Ms Pope highlighted the critical role of migrants in addressing global challenges such as economic development, demographic shifts and labour shortages.
“The world needs migration,” she noted. “We need migrants to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and to fill the skills gaps that are hindering economic growth.”
Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education Ambassador Frederick Shava further underlined the Government’s recognition of the diaspora’s potential.
He said President Mnangagwa has consistently engaged with diaspora communities during his international travels, fostering a sense of connection and encouraging their contributions to the nation’s development.
