Zim Cricket eye NPL T20 Blast success

ZIMBABWE Cricket (ZC) has gone all out to make sure that the domestic premier club Twenty20 competition, NPL T20 Blast, is a resounding success on and off the field.

The top eight teams from the just-ended National Premier League 45-overs competition will battle it out for the coveted trophy starting today in Harare.

Midlands are represented by Mbizo Cricket Club, Bulawayo has Queens Sports Club, Manicaland, and Westside Cricket Club, with Harare providing the bulk of teams in defending champions Takashinga Patriots 2, Takashinga Patriots 1, SOGO Rangers and Rainbow Cricket Club.

The presence of national team players provides another high entertainment value for the spectators and like any tournament new stars will be born.

Wonder Chisango, Eagles General Manager and NPL T20 Blast tournament director and his organising committee want to build on last year’s success when the NPL T20 Blast play-offs and finals made history by becoming the first club games to be played under floodlights.

“Zimbabwe Cricket has implemented key strategies to ensure the success of the NPL T20 BLAST tournament by establishing a dedicated committee responsible for effective management and oversight of the event. This committee has worked diligently to guarantee a successful tournament,” said Chisango.

The tournament is also being used as a platform to showcase local talent and expose the best local players to pressure cooker T20 tournament cricket.

International matches at Harare Sports Club and Queens Sports Club are always full to the brim but the same cannot be said about domestic cricket matches.

ZC has decided to marry music and cricket to attract new fans to the game as part of its fan engagement drive.

“We are also prioritising talent development to showcase local players and have introduced engaging fan initiatives that foster community excitement. On the final day of the tournament, we will host a special show featuring two guest artists—stay tuned to our ZC social media platforms for the names,” he added.

“Additionally, we are creating a family-friendly atmosphere by offering a fun park for kids, along with food and drinks available for purchase. Moreover, the field of play is in excellent condition, promising a thrilling contest between bat and ball.”

Whilst it remains the tournament organisers’ wish to fill the ground, they have not forgotten about those who are not able to come and watch live in the stadium.

“All matches will be streamed live on ZC Facebook and YouTube pages, ensuring that cricket fans can enjoy the action both on-site and from the comfort of their homes,” added Chisango.

“Collectively, these efforts aim to create a competitive, engaging, and accessible tournament that celebrates local talent while fostering a strong connection between cricket and the community.”
