FOUR Bulawayo junior cricketers won individual accolades at an invitational tournament that was held in Johannesburg’s Houghton Park, South Africa, last week. Muziwandile Ndlovu was voted as the tournament’s Best Batsman with the Best Fielder’s accolade going to Tatenda Chinyemba while Michael Musiwako got the Top Wicketkeepers’ award.
Zola Nsingo won the Most Economical Bowler’s trophy.
The players who turn out for Success Sports Academy’s Under-13 cricket side were part of the team that won the Declaration Cricket tournament trophy after beating Panthers by 30 runs in the final.
The Success Sports Academy’s manager Zibusiso Netha said the tournament was an eye-opener for the youngsters and they are going to hold a similar tournament in December with the hope that the South Africans will attend.
Success Sports Academy is under Roosters Cricket Club which is a member of the Bulawayo Metropolitan Cricket League and affiliated to Matabeleland Tuskers Cricket Franchise.
“We were invited by the Bongani Ntini Cricket Academy for the Declaration Cricket festival which is a junior tournament. The competition started on 3 August and ended on 5 August. It was really an eye- opener for the boys as they were exposed to better facilities and good competition.
“When we arrived we had two warm-up matches with Bongani Ntini’s teams and we lost all the games which were being played on astroturf. The boys were adjusting to the field and when the real tournament began we beat Panthers by four wickets, Lions by 5 wickets and Bongani Ntini’s Under-13 A in the semi-finals by 11 runs. We then met Panthers again in the final who we beat by 30 runs,” said Netha.
Other players who are said to have shined for the Bulawayo team include Ethan Darlington and McLafin Mugoba.
Netha said their trip was made possible by Matabeleland Tuskers who facilitated the paperwork, Arenel, Fawcett, Task Footwear and parents.
