THE Zimbabwe Davis Cup team overcome the loss of a game to beat Madagascar and finish top of their Pool A at the Group III Africa Group round-robin matches in Cairo, Egypt, yesterday. Benjamin Lock lost the opening game but Takanyi Garanganga evened the scores when he beat his opponent 6-1, 6-4. Garanganga and Mark Fynn then played in the decisive doubles match which they won 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-0).
The 2-1 victory means Zimbabwe claimed the top spot in Pool A and will now meet the runner-up from the other group that has Algeria, Namibia, Benin, Mozambique and Botswana.
Zimbabwe beat Congo 3-0 in the first match on Monday and then overcame Nigeria by the same margin yesterday.
Tennis Zimbabwe administrator Cliff Nhokwara said chances were now bright that Zimbabwe could progress to Group II.
“It’s not cast in stone that we have qualified because we still have to play the runners-up in the other group.
“We could play Algeria, Namibia or Benin but we have made strides,” said Nhokwara. However, Nhokwara was quick to warn Dzuwa and his men to remain focused on the assignment at hand.
