ZIMBABWE’S ambassador to South Africa, David Hamadziripi, is on his way to the scene of the tragic bus accident in Limpopo Province where 42 people were killed on Sunday evening.
The ambassador will be joined by consulate staff as they visit the crash site near Makhado to assist affected nationals and coordinate consular services.
The ill-fated bus was travelling from Port Elizabeth to Harare when the driver reportedly lost control, plunging into an embankment along a winding, mountainous section of the N1 road. The bus was carrying both Zimbabwean and Malawian passengers.
Zimbabwe’s Consul-General to Johannesburg, Eria Phiri, confirmed the development and said the embassy team would provide on-site assistance.
“The Ambassador and our consulate staff are already on their way to Makhado to offer the necessary consular services to our nationals with the support of our hosts,” said Phiri. “We will share more details at a later stage.”
Rescue teams remained at the scene on Monday as authorities continued efforts to identify the deceased and assist the injured.
The devastating crash has sent shockwaves across Zimbabwe, Malawi and South Africa, with leaders and families mourning the loss of dozens of lives.
