THE Zimbabwe national table tennis team is gearing up for the African Union Sports Council Region games to be held in Gaborone, Botswana at the end of this month.

The event will take place from 25 to 29 January at Botho University Hall. The regional competition will have 13 Southern African countries, including Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique, Angola, Namibia, Malawi and the hosts Botswana.

Both men and women teams will be competing at the regional tournament for singles, doubles and mixed doubles categories.

Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union (ZTTU) national technical director Noah Ferenando said the table tennis players have started their preparations.

“Our players have begun their training at various centres in preparation for the upcoming Region 5 games. The players that will represent the country in Botswana for men and women will be the top ranked players in the sporting code who have partook in the previous international competitions,’’ said Ferenando.

According to Ferenando, the national side will be led by Takudzwa Mudoni as the head coach.

“The players are training under the guidance of equally qualified coaches in the provinces but Takudzwa Mudoni will be at the helm of the team as national head coach in Botswana,’’ he said.

ZTTU president John Muringani said the players are looking forward to participating in this year’s competitions.

“Our players are looking forward in competing at the Region 5 games in Botswana and they have high hopes of raising the nation’s flag high,’’ said Muringani. — @J_sihwa
