themselves battling for position number three as tournament debutantes Zim Kiwis from New Zealand lifted the Zimpride 2011 Easter/Independence Trophy here on Sunday.
Zim Kiwis FC handed South Australia Zim Association (SAZA) FC from Adelaide an emphatic 4-0 defeat in the final played before a cheering crowd of over 2000 Zimbabweans at Merrylands Park Sports Centre.
Zim Kiwis knocked out Zambezi Warriors 3-1 in the semi-finals while impressive SAZA FC dismissed highly-rated ZimVic 2-1 to proceed to the finals.
The ZIMPRIDE sports tournament is an annual event bringing together Zimbabweans resident in Australia and it has been going on for the past five years.
This year the tournament included Zimba-bweans residing in New Zealand and the Zim Kiwis marked their debut year in this tournament with a polished performance that saw them lifting the Trophy and flying it across the Tasman Sea to neighbouring New Zealand.
Highly-talented Gerald Chunga from New Zealand was voted Player of the Tournament while Sydney’s Shiyar Cakal was the top goal scorer with eight goals to his name.
New Zealand’s Prosper Zvandaziva was voted goalkeeper of the tournament.
Speaking before presenting the winners the trophy, Zimbabwe’s Deputy Ambassador to Australia Felix Nyamupinga, thanked the Zimpride organisers and sponsors, Multicultural HIV/Aids and Hepatitis C Services.
Washington Mazambani also chipped in as an individual sponsor and the Deputy Ambassador, who was standing in for Ambassador Jacqueline Zwambila, urged Zimbabweans in the Pacific to keep up the spirit of oneness and to uphold Zimbabwe’s cultural values for the benefit of the young people growing up in the Diaspora.
Zimpride Chairman Bernard Muchemwa was full of praise for the pre-tournament coverage carried by The Herald for this event.
“I want to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Zimbabwean community in Australia for coming in their thousands to illuminate Zimpride Sydney 2011 and turning it into the greatest showpiece ever for Zimba-bweans in the Pacific.
“We stand tall today amongst our peers and our African brothers and sisters because of you. This is the day Zimbabwe won.
“Thumps up to The Herald for keeping people back home informed that we still live the lives we lived back in Zimbabwe.”
Next year’s tournament will be held in Brisbane.
