Zim pledges support for Dlamini-Zuma

Dlamini-Zuma was significant in that she became the first woman chairperson of the commission in the history of the organisation.
She is also the first Southern African national to hold this position.
“This is of fundamental significance and great inspiration to Southern Africa and to all women who have always underestimated their abilities.
“We believe this will in itself help in the push for the fulfillment of the social development of the continent, bearing in mind the plight of the underprivileged, children, internally and international displaced and victims of war,” she said.
The event was a commemoration of
Dr Dlamini-Zuma’s elevation to the AU Commission Chair.
Cde Mujuru said she has known Dr Zuma since the days of the liberation struggle.
She expressed confidence in Dr Dlamini-Zuma because of her vast experience and political and administrative skills, which she said, were essential in addressing some of the challenges facing the continent.
“Dr Zuma’s years spent in the department of Home affairs will help strengthen the peace and security arm of the African Commission as we seek solutions to the challenges in Madagascar, the Sahel Region and Somalia to name a few.
Cde Mujuru said Dr Dlamini-Zuma’s stint at the helm of the department of International Relations and Co-operation of South Africa will benefit the continent as Africa seeks to strengthen influence at the international fora including the reform of the UN Security Council.
“We know it is not going to be an easy road but with total support and team spirit from the continent and the global economy, the development agenda for the continent will become a reality,” she said.
Dr Dlamini-Zuma  made history by landing the hotly contested AU Commission chairmanship after getting the backing of 37 countries ousting incumbent Jean Ping of Gabon at the summit in Ethiopia in July.
