ZIMBABWE’S Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Professor Dr Amon Murwira and his South African counterpart, the Minister of International Relations Ronald Lamola are in Beitbridge for a high-profile tour of the newly modernised Beitbridge Border Post.

The two ministers, accompanied by delegations, will tour the upgraded facility before proceeding to Zebra Hill Lodge for a bilateral meeting aimed at strengthening Zimbabwe-South Africa relations.

Professor Murwira is joined by Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to South Africa, Mr David Hamadziripi, and senior officials from various government sectors.

The meeting is set to reaffirm the deep historical, political, and economic ties shared by Zimbabwe and South Africa, shaped by shared geography, culture, and a legacy of regional solidarity. Key discussions will focus on enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and cross-border infrastructure development. Zimbabwe will reaffirm its commitment to deepening engagement with South Africa, its largest trading partner.

This dialogue comes at a crucial time as both countries strive to revitalise their economies, address regional challenges, and strengthen partnerships within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

One-Stop Centres (OSCs) and One-Stop Border Posts (OSBPs) like Beitbridge are vital to the AfCFTA’s success, streamlining cross-border trade by consolidating services into a single, efficient location.

The Beitbridge Border Post has undergone a transformative US$300 million upgrade by the Zimborders consortium, turning Southern Africa’s busiest land border into a state-of-the-art facility.

Enhancements include separate terminals for different traffic types, a one-stop border post system to minimise delays, automated queuing and payment solutions, and advanced non-intrusive cargo scanners.

These improvements boost capacity, facilitate regional trade, and set a new standard for border efficiency in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The upgrade project is part of a 17-and-a-half-year public-private partnership between the government and Zimborders, with the consortium managing and maintaining the facility until handover at the end of the concession period.

Currently, border authorities clear 60 percent of commercial cargo at Beitbridge in under three hours. Plans are underway to adopt AI technologies to further enhance operations.

Annually, approximately seven million travelers and nearly 1,200 commercial trucks, 200 buses, and 2,100 light vehicles pass through the border daily. These numbers are expected to multiply fivefold with the new efficiency systems.

The US$300 million project seeks to promote regional integration and improve trade facilitation by upgrading infrastructure, implementing the one-stop border post concept, coordinating border management, and extending operational hours to accommodate growing trade volumes.
