Zimbabwe has been elected to the Council of Administration of the Universal Postal Union at the ongoing 28th Congress in Dubai, marking a significant diplomatic victory for the country.
The election placed Zimbabwe among fellow African nations under Region 5, namely Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Seychelles, Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania in shaping the future of global postal governance.
The win is an endorsement of Zimbabwe’s leadership credentials on the international stage.
The victory is more than a seat as it it is a clear recognition of the reverence and respect Zimbabwe commands globally.
Speaking after the country’s election, Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services Tatenda Mavetera who is leading the country’s delegation at the Congress said Zimbabwe would continue to advance innovation and inclusivity within the global postal community.
“Zimbabwe remains committed to building a strong, connected and inclusive global postal community — guided by the vision of His Excellency President Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa,” she said.
The UPU, a United Nations specialised agency, plays a pivotal role in coordinating international postal policies and fostering global collaboration in the sector.
For Zimbabwe, the election is both a diplomatic milestone and an opportunity to contribute to shaping the future of postal and courier services at a global level.
The Council of Administration (CA) consists of 41 member countries and meets annually at UPU headquarters in Berne.
The Council ensures the continuity of the UPU’s work between Congresses, supervises its activities and studies regulatory, administrative, legislative and legal issues.
