Zimbabwe will once again take its place on the global arts stage following Cabinet’s approval of the country’s participation at the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, set for May to November 2026 in Italy.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Zhemu Soda said the exhibition, commonly known as the Venice Biennale, remains the world’s most prestigious platform for visual arts and presents a critical opportunity for Zimbabwe to amplify its cultural voice.

“The Venice Biennale is the world’s most prestigious platform for visual arts exhibition, which will enable Zimbabwean artists, curators and thinkers to articulate their own perspectives, histories and futures,” said Dr Soda.

Participation, the Minister said, would go beyond the arts sector, unlocking broader national benefits.

“Zimbabwe’s presence will enhance its visibility among influential international stakeholders, fostering relationships that extend beyond the arts into tourism, education and broader economic partnerships,” he said.

Zimbabwe will be making its eighth consecutive appearance at the exhibition, having first debuted in 2011 at the 54th edition. Over the years, the country’s pavilion has grown into a key platform for showcasing local talent and strengthening cultural diplomacy.

At the 2026 showcase, Zimbabwe will be represented by the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, which will run the country’s pavilion.

The Executive Director of the Gallery will serve as Commissioner of the Pavilion, while the Deputy Director will take up the role of Curator.

This year’s exhibition will feature five Zimbabwean visual artists — Ms Eva Raath, Mr Gideon Gomo, Mr Felix Shumba, Mr Franklyn Dzingai and Mr Pardon Mapondera — who will present their work under the theme “Second Nature/Manyonga”.

The participation is expected to further position Zimbabwe as a vibrant cultural hub while opening new opportunities for local creatives in the international market.
