Zim Summer Series gets new sponsor

THE country’s premier motorcycling event, the Zimbabwe Summer Series, now has a brand new name and maybe a much brighter future, too.

In fact, something of a bigger picture is taking shape. This motocross event may not just be a one-off, but a sign of things to come.

The Bogwheelers Club, who run motocross in this country, are preparing to put pedal to the medal and put up an “unforgettable show” for this year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series.

Scott Fraser, the chairman of the Bogwheelers Club, revealed yesterday that they have secured a new title sponsor for the Zimbabwe Summer Series.

This year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series, which has been slated to run from December 11 to 15 at Donnybrook Raceway in Harare, will this year be sponsored by Surge Energy Drink.

They have taken over from Betterbrands Petroleum who were the title sponsors of the Zimbabwe Summer Series last year.

The coming in of Betterbrands Petroleum as the main sponsors of last year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series saw the event attracting a record entry of more than 22 professional riders from overseas and 14 from South Africa.

But Fraser told the Zimpapers Sports yesterday that this year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series will surpass last year’s event both in sponsorship and in the number of foreign riders who will be flying to this part of the world in December to tackle the track at the famous Donnybrook Park Raceway in Harare.

” . . . Ok just got confirmed, we’ve a new title sponsor for this year and it will be Surge Energy Drink.

“We are looking at 30-40 international riders from Europe and Southern Africa.

Both motocross and Supercross tracks will be rebuilt to provide even better action for the fans,” Fraser said.

The event will, as usual, open with its first of two Supercross (night racing) events on Wednesday December 11. The second Supercross race meeting will be staged on Friday December 13 followed by a full day of some high octane of motocross racing on Sunday December 15.

During the two nights of Supercross action, audiences can watch skilled riders compete on the challenging track, showcasing talent in various race categories.

There will also be a special demonstration during the three days of action and spectators are also welcome to watch the setup and see the excitement as the track takes shape.

Another member of the Bogwheelers Club, who asked not to be named, also said they were thrilled to celebrate another three days of the season-ending motocross event in Zimbabwe and to give back to the community that has supported them over the past years.

“This event is a fantastic opportunity to bring every motocross fan together for three days of fun.”

He also explained that “many similar meets are having a serious decline in numbers”, adding that the Zimbabwe Summer Series event is retaining its numbers well which “shows the popularity”.

“It’s never been a better time to be a motocross fan, with the volume and quality of professional riders we get to enjoy!

“We’re bringing you some of the world’s favourite motocross riders and this will bring more excitement to this year’s event.”

The event, which began in the 1990s, will feature a fantastic lineup of races, family-friendly activities, and fundraising efforts for a number of familiar charities.

Last year’s three-day race meeting attracted more than 5 000 motocross fans who packed Donnybrook each day, making it the most watched sporting event in Zimbabwe in 2023.
