Zimbabwe Closed Championships set to begin tomorrow.
The three-day event will feature players from across the country and will end on Monday.
Tournament director, Linsent Chitiyo, said six provinces that are currently competing in the Harare Junior Open have confirmed their participation in the Zimbabwe Closed Championships.
“We have players from Masvingo, Midlands, Manicaland, Mashonaland East, Bulawayo and Harare who are taking part in the Harare Open and they will be competing in the championships.
“Entries are still coming and will be closed tomorrow (today) in the afternoon,” said Chtiyo.
Chitiyo said they expect a tough competition in the championships as the young players battle to accumulate points for national rankings.
“Technically the Zimbabwe Closed has high ranking points and every player wants to get more points to be selected into the national team.
“The players have the opportunity to accumulate more points even those who did not take part in the provincial tournaments that were being held in different provinces.
“The competition is going to be stiff, no one has higher chances of winning the event because from the past event that were being held there has been upsets so anyone can win,” said Chitiyo.
The tournament director said the participation of the junior teams in international events will also motivate the players as they battle it out for places in the national team.
“Everyone is trying to fight for honours in this event. The junior teams have been travelling a lot and everyone wants to travel also. The motivation level is really high.
“Every player has to play in their proper age group and it is really going to be challenging,” said Chitiyo. Innocent Mhere is expected to defend his title in the boys Under-18 category while Pauline Chawafambira will be out to retain the title in the girls category.
Other players expeted to take part in the championships are Valeria Bhunu, Ngoni Chiwewete and Tadiwa Mberi.
