Zim to mark World Standards Day

day in recognition of the importance of standards in people’s lives.
This year’s commemorations are being held under the theme “Less waste, better standards —standards increase efficiency”.
To mark the commemorations, the Standards Association of Zimbabwe will host a half-day seminar centred on the theme.
According to SAZ this year’s theme is relevant due to global challenges faced by many organisations of sustainability, liquidity challenges, high cost of borrowing, all which require organisations to achieve better results with less waste for business continuity.
The commemorations come at a time when the country is working towards rebuilding the economy and industrialists are expressing their concern over the increase in importation of sub-standard products, which threaten the viability of local companies.
According to the International Standardisation Organisation international standards are crucial for increasing efficiency.
In a statement to mark the commemorations, ISO president Dr Boris Aleshin said more efficient industrial and business processes, facilitated by standards, empower companies to compete globally, and produce faster for more markets at a lesser cost.
“In today’s highly competitive and complex world, the issue of sustainability, viewed from an economic, environmental and societal perspective means that businesses must be more efficient across a wide range of measures and issues.
“International standards are powerful tools for helping organisations capitalise their potential in the global marketplace.
“Developed by experts from around the world, they contain internationally harmonised best practice which can be used to measure, compare and increase efficiency and reduce waste,” said Dr Aleshin. He added that regulators could use international standards as a means to show compliance and as a base for market- and consumer-friendly regulations.
