IN A HURRY to get to work, you now only need a smartphone to hitch a ride as enterprising application designers in Zimbabwe have come up with their own version of Uber, an application used for hiring taxis around town.
Named after the infamous hwindi/owindi associated with kombi operators, the application is set to change the manner in which people travel to town using public transport.
The application, just like Uber, allows one to locate their drivers, track their movement and also hire a ride just by two clicks.
Besides offering taxi services the application also offers a diverse range of services like Hwindi Tour and private hires.
a?Hwindi application is a South African and Zimbabweas real-time automated location based smart booking and dispatch platform for the transport sector a mainly for taxis ridesharing and tow trucks,a? read the statements from the application developers.
The application was developed in 2015 in a bid to match international standards, as the application promises to change and make it effortless to hitch a ride to work.
a?Hwindi is evolving the way the world moves. By connecting passengers to drivers through smartphone technology, we make transport more accessible, opening up more possibilities for passengers and more business for traditional taxi drivers,a? read the statement.
However, local commuter omnibus operator, Talent Siziba, said the application would bring serious competition and be a nightmare to taxi operators who are not tech savvy.
a?This brings serious competition that is going to kill our business as we are already struggling with pirate taxis. The other thing is that many of us drivers are not into smart gadgets. We will struggle to become accustomed to using the app,a? said Siziba.
