A ZIMBABWEAN woman has been named among the best five African Women in Agribusiness best packaging in the Small to Medium Enterprises category.
The Agribusiness award honours women whose new businesses revitalise their communities.
Tracy Mapfumo (28) emerged in the top five, from 814 contestants, from around the continent.
Mapfumo is a passion-driven SME entrepreneur who has created a brand for herself through her Eny’s Treats business.
Her business started in October 2018, and it specialises in snacks made from natural ingredients, mostly edible seeds.
Her clients are mostly urban health-conscious consumers.
After completing tertiary education at the University of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa, where she majored in Agriculture Crop Science, her passion for food science pushed her to start a business of her own.
Speaking to H-Metro, Mapfumo was excited about the nomination and believes she will beat her four other competitors and bring the award home.
“The opportunity allows me to network with other businesspeople to further develop my products.
“I generally like to experiment with food – from the way it is grown to the way it is prepared for consumption by mostly adding more value to it.
“In 2014, just before I completed my honours degree, l lost my mother to heart failure.
“Since then, my experimentation with food has become more focused on food that can enhance one’s health, or reduce the risk, of certain health conditions.”
She said the informal sector plays an important role in providing employment to youths and women.
The awards night will be held on Saturday at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, Ghana.
