Zimbabwe has mounted a robust presence at the China International Import Expo that opened in Shanghai today, signalling a determined push to attract foreign capital and forge strategic partnerships essential for economic growth.

Fifteen companies are exhibiting at the CIIE, whilst another business delegation and several senior Government officials are also attending.

In an interview at the Zimbabwe Exhibition Pavilion, ZimTrade client advisor for export development, Mr Kupakwashe Midzi said the Zimbabwean pavilion at the fair had been oversubscribed.

“In addition to the 15 companies, we have more businesses that could not get space, but have shown interest in participating at the CIIE.

“As Zimbabwe, we know that China is a very promising market. It opens up a lot of opportunities…we are looking at all the sectors of the economy, like manufacturing, agriculture, mining, value addition, and so much more.

“We are seeking business opportunities with buyers and engagements with investors,” he said.

On Thursday, a business forum facilitated by the Zimbabwean Embassy in China and ZimTrade will be held in Shanghai, with several investors expected to participate.

Mashonaland East Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Itayi Ndudzo, is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the business forum.

Other Ministers of Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube (Midlands) and Christian Magomo (Mashonaland Central) will also attend.

In his opening remarks at the fair, China’s Premier Li Qiang said the CIIE serves as a gateway to China’s economy and a bridge to the world.

He revealed that China’s economy is expected to grow to over 170 trillion by 2030.

Criticising trade tariffs, Premier Li said China does not seek unilateral wins but has opened up its economy for the greater good of the international community.

The eighth CIIE, which runs until November 10, will feature 4 08 overseas exhibitors from 155 countries.
