Zim youths for China Youth Olympics

Sports Reporter ZIMBABWE will be represented in five sporting disciplines at this year’s Youth Olympics set to be hosted by China next month. The country will have athletes drawn from athletics, aquatics, equestrian sports, rowing and triathlon according to a statement from the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee. “The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) has confirmed the members of Team Zimbabwe to participate at the Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) to be staged in Nanjing, China, from August 16-28. Ten athletes, six officials and a Young Ambassador have been confirmed by the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (NYOGOC),” read the statement.

In swimming (aquatics) promising stars Chad Idelhson and Robyn Lee will be part of the team coached by Lorna Riley, a veteran of many seasons in the sport, who has been among the country’s best administrators and coaches in the discipline for a while. Enlitha Ncube, Titus Nyathi and Maryjoy Mudyiravanji are the athletes to be coached by Brian Nhubu.

One of the growing but lesser known sporting disciplines, equestrian which produced a runner-up in the World Championships three seasons ago in Paula Dakin, Zimbabwe will send Sophie Teede with Charley Crockart as coach. Rowing which is still an elitist sport will have Daniella du Toit and Kyle Hinde. Joanne Swanepoel has been assigned to accompany the rowers as their coach.

Triathlon, a fading sport which a decade ago enjoyed fair sponsorship and activities in Bulawayo, Harare and Mutare would also be represented. Serena Rendell and Drew Williams will represent Zimbabwe with Pamela Fulton as coach. Veteran administrator and member of the Zimbabwe Olympic Board Titus Zvomuya is the chef de mission with Rukudzo Gona part of the team as a Young Ambassador.

The athletes will join about 3,800  others from across the globe at the four-yearly event. The competition is intended for athletes between the ages of 14 and 18.
