Zim youths to visit shrines

Youths in Mashonaland Central are set to travel to Tanzania’s Mgagao Liberation War Camp as well as other liberation war shrines to acquaint themselves with the history of the liberation struggle.

Minister of State for Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs Advocate Martin Dinha said this yesterday at Africa Day celebrations in Shamva.

Adv Dinha said the trip will comprise of students from the province’s universities, colleges and other vocational training institutions as part of efforts to make them appreciate the history of the country and continue upholding the gains of the revolution.

“We want to take the youths to where the Mgagao Declaration was signed and the trip will be an eye opener that will help the youths understand what transpired during the liberation struggle,” he said.

Mashonaland Central Zanu-PF provincial chairman Cde Dickson Mafios said logistics were being put in place to make the trip a success.

He urged the province’s business community and stakeholders to play a part in sponsoring the trip.

Mgagao, Chimoio, Nyadzonia and Freedom camps in Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia respectively are historical shrines that house some of Zimbabwe’s liberation fighters’ mass graves.

Zimbabweans from different walks of life have been to these shrines in a bid to reconnect themselves with the country’s liberation struggle.

There have been calls for the shrines to be turned into historical heritage sites to preserve the memories of the struggle.
