Ferrochrome producer, Zimasco, has started evicting defaulting tenants, who were not willing to pay new rentals that it announced recently.
Zimasco, which closed its Shurugwi plant about six years ago, has been letting out its properties, including houses that used to accommodate its employees.
The company recently increased its rentals fivefold, resulting in an outcry from tenants who argue that the increase was too high.
Rentals for houses in the high density area were increased from $500 a month to $2 800, while tenants occupying low density houses are now paying $28 000 from $4 500.
Zimasco, through its lawyers, Danziger and Partners, started the evictions yesterday, which caught many tenants unawares.
The firm’s human resources manager, Mr Fungai Manyau, confirmed the evictions, but declined to give further details.
