THE highly anticipated match between Zimbabwe A and Bulawayo Select, which was pencilled in for tomorrow at Hartsfield Rugby Grounds has been postponed to a later date yet to be advised.
In what was promising to be an exhilarating day of rugby, the new date for the game is set to be advised. Milton Elephants were also meant to face off against Plumtree High School on the same day as a curtain raiser, however, that match has also been postponed.
In a letter directed to the headmaster of Milton High School by Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board (BMRFB) vice chairperson, Carrington Busili, he said the union will advise on when the matches will take place.
“This letter serves as a notification that the Zimbabwe A match against Bulawayo Select, which was scheduled to be played at Hartsfield on the 6th of July 2024 has been postponed to a later date, which the union will advise.
In light of this development, please note the match between Milton High School and Plumtree High School has also been postponed to a later date. We apologise for any inconvenience caused,” read the letter from Busili.
With a training squad for the match having been called up by BMRFB, it meant that club activities were disrupted hence there will be no action this week.
There will be no Archer Clothing Rugby League matches taking place this week. The league resumed last week from a mid-season break. The return saw Bulldogs register their maiden victory of the campaign with a 29-11 win over Highlanders while table topper, Old Miltonians (OMs) pummelled Panthers 59-3.
The Newaman Hlatshwayo mentored Bulldogs are now tied on six points with the fourth placed Panthers who suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of OMs. Despite the win and getting the bonus point, Bulldogs remain at the bottom of the standings.
On the other end of the table, OMs’ massive win saw them open a nine point gap between them and second placed defending champions, Matabeleland Warriors. OMs are now on 24 points from their five matches while – in four games – Warriors are on 15 points.
OMs remain as the only side yet to taste defeat as they are looking at dethroning their old foes Warriors. The women’s league action also resumed this past Saturday with only one game taking place.
It was Highlanders Ladies and Panthers Ladies who battled it out in what turned out to be an exciting 10-10 draw. The two sides are, however, still far off the log leaders, Warriors Ladies who are on 20 points from four matches. Highlanders are now on nine points while Panthers are on four. —@brandon_malvin
