EACH African country that participated in the liberation struggle will be given 4 000 square metres of land at the Liberation City housing the Museum of African Liberation in Harare, President Mnangagwa has said.

This was revealed by Institute of African Knowledge chief executive, Ambassador Kwame Muzawazi, during a Sadc Preparatory Mission tour of Liberation City led by its Deputy Executive Secretary Corporate Affairs Dr Judith Kateera last Friday.

Ambassador Muzawazi said the President said since it is a continental project, all countries should have an acre of the Liberation City as they are key stakeholders.

“His Excellency the President Dr Mnangagwa has offered all countries that took part in the African liberation struggle an acre to erect monuments commemorating their own histories.

“Through his special envoy, Honourable Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, that message was conveyed to all the Heads of State and they were very responsive and appreciative of this gesture by Zimbabwe which is going to add weight to the Liberation City,” he said.

Speaking of the Sadc tour, Ambassador Muzawazi said it was a great honour to receive the Sadc delegation as part of preparations for the Sadc summit that will be hosted by Zimbabwe in August later this year.

“So, the Sadc team came to inspect the facilities and see what is in store, they have been very impressed,” he said.

Dr Kateera appreciated the ongoing works at the Liberation City saying the initiative for the museum “is great”.

“This is a great project which I would really like to encourage all member states and institutions like schools, universities to visit because it is going to be an information hub on our heritage, history. I would really want to urge and encourage all member states who are going to come that they also bring in that historical information which tells the true story of their countries,” she said.

The Museum of African Liberation is situated on a 103-hectare site known as Liberation City, whose construction has already commenced.

The Liberation City is 7km southwest of Harare city centre along the busy trunk road Samora Machel Avenue, aptly named after Mozambique’s founding father, the late Cde Samora Machel.

It will house the museum as the main attraction and will include a 5-star hotel, an amusement park, theme park, animal park, various national monuments including a heritage village among many recreational and amusement facilities.

The Liberation City is projected to be a family friendly attraction for both local, regional and international tourists who will enjoy history, heritage, recreational, commercial and amusement facilities to be established at the new city.
