ZIMBABWE is bidding for a seat at the Universal Postal Union (UPU) Council of Administration (CA), a strategic platform to shape the future of global postal services, a Cabinet Minister has said.
Minister of Information, Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Tatenda Mavetera made the remarks on the sidelines of the 28th UPU Elective Congress, which is underway in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The UPU is a United Nations specialised agency and the postal sector’s primary forum for international cooperation.
For over 40 years, Zimbabwe has been a member of the UPU, a sign of its commitment to innovation, collaboration and transformation in the global postal sector.
Minister Mavetera is leading a delegation that includes Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to the UAE, H.E. Lovemore Mazemo, Potraz Deputy Director General Mr Alfred Marisa and the Postmaster General of Zimpost Mr Maxwell Chitendeni, among others.
Minister Mavetera said they have been working tirelessly to lobby support ahead of Thursday’s elections.
“Over the past days, Zimbabwe has engaged with several member states also contesting positions in the Council of Administration and Postal Operations Council. Key engagements have included: Uganda – Hon. Chris Baryomunsi (Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Kenya – Hon. Gitau (Minister of ICT), Burkina Faso – Hon. Dr. Aminata Zerbo-Sabané (Minister of Digital Transition, Posts & Electronic Communications), Guinea – Hon. Rose Pola Pricemou (Minister of Posts, Telecommunications & Digital Economy), South Africa – Hon. Mondli Gungubele (Deputy Minister of Communications & Digital Technologies), Australia, Mongolia, Morocco, Bangladesh, China, Vietnam and many others.
“Our promise as Zimbabwe is to: Advocate for the unique priorities of the global postal network, Strengthen collaboration between UPU members and partners, Champion innovation and sustainability in the postal sector, Promote tech-driven solutions to enhance postal services and; Advance Africa’s development through robust postal operations,” said Minister Mavetera.
