RUZIVO Media & Resource Centre has released the first episode of a five-part documentary series exploring the enduring and evolving relationship between Zimbabwe and China, marking a significant milestone as the two nations celebrate 45 years of diplomatic ties.

Titled China-Zimbabwe @45: Building a Community with a Shared Future from Strong Foundations, the documentary premièred its first instalment, Part 1: Historical Foundations, on YouTube over the weekend.

The episode delves into the historical roots of the bilateral relationship, tracing it from the days of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle to the establishment of formal diplomatic relations in 1980 and beyond.

China was the first country to establish diplomatic ties with Zimbabwe following its independence and played a critical role during the liberation era by providing military and technical support to freedom fighters.

Among those who benefitted from China’s support was President Mnangagwa, who received military training in the early 1960s.

In a statement, Ruzivo Media Director and Project Lead, Mr Tichaona Zindoga, described the launch as a “milestone achievement” for both historical documentation and future engagement.

“We are delighted to be involved with this project, which is much more than a documentation and historical.

“It is a living discourse on Zimbabwe-China relations as we look at the whole continuum and dynamics of the relationship between the two sides, from history to the future account,” said Mr Zindoga, an award-winning journalist and political commentator.

Mr Zindoga said the series aims to present a balanced view of the partnership by including diverse perspectives from citizens, experts, and policymakers.

“Our audiences will also appreciate that there are some critical aspects we discuss in this documentary which reflect the true nature of Zimbabwe-China relations, including challenges and problems.

“Lastly, this project is important in its attempt to map the future of Zimbabwe-China relations and how the youth of today can be vital players and stakeholders in the future amid changes in the global arena, ranging from geopolitics to technology,” he said.

The documentary series is divided into five thematic episodes, covering areas that include historical foundations, present-day achievements, voices of the people, expert opinions, and a vision for the future.

The full 30-minute feature film, encapsulating all five parts, is scheduled for release in November.
The inaugural episode, available here: https://youtu.be/mzPXeo8KBFg?si=ALZUHVOwEFYKIybU, sets the tone for broader public engagement and appreciation of the comprehensive strategic partnership, which is often described as an “all-weather” and “five-star ironclad friendship” between Harare and Beijing.

With its mix of archival footage, interviews, and narrative storytelling, China-Zimbabwe @45 promises to offer a thought-provoking and timely exploration of one of Zimbabwe’s most significant international alliances.
