AMID the sweeping landscapes of Liaoning Province, a new chapter in Zimbabwe–China security cooperation unfolded as senior Zimbabwean security and judicial officers completed an intensive training programme designed to strengthen modern policing skills and deepen institutional ties.

Held at the Criminal Investigation Police University of China in Shenyang, the two-week specialised seminar brought together Zimbabwean officials and Chinese law enforcement experts for an exchange of knowledge on policing strategies, organised crime prevention, counter-terrorism measures and emerging security challenges in a rapidly changing world.

At the closing ceremony, the head of delegation Police Commissioner Taonei Nyazema said the programme reflected the growing friendship between Zimbabwe and China, built around shared learning, cooperation and a common commitment to peace and security.

“Opening your doors and sharing your knowledge with us has expanded our understanding of modern policing and strengthened our capacity to serve our people,” Com Nyazema said.

He said the lessons gained during the seminar would continue beyond the classroom, providing practical insights that could support the continued development of Zimbabwe’s policing institutions.

“The knowledge we have acquired here will not remain here; it will find expression in our institutions when we return home,” he said.

The training exposed participants to China’s approaches to public safety, governance and technology-driven law enforcement, highlighting the role of innovation, intelligence and community-focused policing in addressing contemporary security concerns.

Beyond formal sessions, the delegation also explored China’s rich cultural heritage through a visit to the Shenyang Imperial Palace. The visit offered participants an opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation of China’s history and civilisation.

Comm Nyazema described the cultural experience as a reminder that national strength is shaped not only by institutions, but also by history, heritage and shared values.

“A nation’s strength is carried in its history, heritage and values. What an eye sees is better than what many ears hear — seeing is believing,” he said.

The seminar also highlighted the importance of international partnerships in tackling security challenges that increasingly cross national boundaries. Chinese officials said the exchange had achieved its goal of enhancing professional capabilities, strengthening mutual understanding and building closer cooperation between the two countries.

CIPUC vice president Professor Wei Xiaoguang said participants should carry forward the knowledge gained during the programme and apply it in their professional work.

“Carry forward the friendship between China and Zimbabwe and become ambassadors of cooperation between our two nations,” he said.

As part of the programme, the Zimbabwean delegation visited Toachang Police Station, where they observed service-oriented and intelligence-led policing approaches.

The visit provided a practical look at China’s law enforcement systems, including efforts to improve public engagement, standardise policing procedures and strengthen community confidence in security services.

For the Zimbabwean officers, the Shenyang experience represented more than a training course. It was an opportunity to build professional networks, exchange ideas and reinforce a partnership centred on knowledge-sharing and cooperation.

As the delegation returns home, the lessons gathered in China are expected to serve as a bridge between two policing institutions — connecting experiences, expertise and a shared vision for safer communities.
