ZIMBABWE Cricket have partnered Old Miltonians to resuscitate sports fields at Milton High School.
For a month, ZC ground staff have been working on the Milton High School sporting facilities to get them to a good condition.
The focus is mostly on the grass fields, which are used for cricket, football and rugby. For now, the rehabilitation work is on cricket and rugby fields.
Ranga Midzi is leading the Old Boys initiative.
Nicholas Singo, the Tuskers general manager said ZC have seconded their ground personnel to work on the school’s sporting infrastructure with the OMs taking care of the payment of staff who are providing expert advice.
“Zimbabwe Cricket is trying to revive all the Milton High School sporting facilities working with the Old Miltonians. ZC is giving expert advice, the Old Boys are paying for the ground staff. Work has been goimg on for a month, we are looking at a long-term relationship between Old Boys and ZC,’’ Singo said.
The plan, according to Singo is such that after giving fields the kiss of life, there is a need to then maintain them to ensure that they do not go back to the bad state that they have been in for years. Singo indicated that the biggest challenge with the Milton fields is that they were full of weeds, which have to be removed.
“After we have resuscitated them, we need to maintain them so we will be there for some time. In the next six months, they should be able to host some minor games. The wickets on some of the fields are not completely dead but there is work that needs to be done. All the fields are full of weeds, that was the major work that had to be done, then watering and cutting,’’ said Singo.
Milton High School has for years not played cricket and rugby on their own fields. They have had to rely on Bulawayo Athletic Club for cricket and Hartsfield for rugby. Yesterday, the Milton rugby teams used their home ground when they played against their Allan Wilson counterparts.
