THE Embassy of Zimbabwe in South Africa has issued a safety advisory warning citizens living in that country to exercise extreme caution following reports of demonstrations targeting foreign nationals.
In Advisory Note Number 1 of 2026, issued on April 28, the embassy said it had received disturbing reports through its consulates in Johannesburg and Cape Town of protests that pose a serious threat to the safety and well-being of Zimbabweans.
“The Consulate of Zimbabwe in Johannesburg and Cape Town have received reports of disturbing demonstrations that are targeting foreign nationals. These incidents pose a serious risk to the safety and well-being of Zimbabwean nationals residing in South Africa,” reads part of the advisory.
Zimbabweans in South Africa — home to one of the largest diasporas from Zimbabwe — have periodically faced threats during outbreaks of xenophobic violence, making the latest warning a cause for concern among families both in the host country and back home.
The embassy urged nationals to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to safeguard themselves during this period of heightened tension.
Among the key recommendations, Zimbabweans have been advised to avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and to stay indoors as much as possible, limiting unnecessary or unplanned movements.
They were also encouraged to report any incidents to the South African Police Service, as well as to Zimbabwe’s diplomatic missions, to ensure swift assistance where possible.
In addition, citizens were reminded to keep essential documents on their person at all times, a precaution that can be critical in situations requiring identification or emergency evacuation.
The embassy reaffirmed Government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad, emphasising that diplomatic missions remain on high alert and ready to assist those in distress.
“The Government of Zimbabwe is committed to ensuring the safety, dignity and well-being of its nationals,” the advisory said.
Zimbabweans in need of assistance have been urged to contact the Embassy in Pretoria or the consulates in Johannesburg and Cape Town using the official communication channels provided.
The latest developments come against a backdrop of recurring tensions in parts of South Africa, where economic pressures and social challenges have at times sparked anti-immigrant sentiment.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
