A ZIMBABWEAN natural haircare manufacturer has become one of the country’s first small-scale cosmetics producers to achieve alignment with an internationally-recognised Good Manufacturing Practice standard, a milestone its founder says positions the company for regional and global expansion.
Manetain Organics, a women-led business based in Harare, has secured certification aligned with ISO 22716:2007, the global benchmark for quality, safety and hygiene in cosmetic production. The certification confirms that the company’s manufacturing processes meet internationally accepted standards, placing it among a select group of African cosmetics firms operating at export-ready levels.
The achievement follows months of intensive systems overhaul, including the implementation of structured quality assurance protocols and operational transformation, according to Lienne Shonhiwa, who founded the business.
“This milestone represents more than certification,” Ms Shonhiwa said. “It reflects a deliberate shift towards structured systems, quality assurance and globally competitive manufacturing standards.”
ISO 22716 is widely regarded as the most recognised international standard for cosmetic Good Manufacturing Practice. The certification is expected to enhance Manetain Organics’ ability to expand into regional markets under the African Continental Free Trade Area, partner with retailers and distributors that require GMP compliance, and attract investment aligned with Zimbabwe’s industrialisation goals.
The company manufactures products formulated for afro-textured hair using indigenous ingredients including marula, mafura and baobab, sourced from local and regional suppliers. It operates a manufacturing facility and retail outlet in Harare, with distribution already established in the formal retail sector.
Ms Shonhiwa credited the certification process to support from the International Trade Centre’s SheTrades initiative, which selected her business for the programme, and the British Embassy in Harare, which she said provided backing for women in trade.
“Without your tireless efforts to empower women to take up space in international trade, I would not be here,” she said. “I hope this serves as proof that what you are doing indeed has impact.”
The announcement comes as demand for natural haircare products continues to grow across Africa and international markets. Manetain Organics is now positioned to scale production for regional and international distribution, contributing to Zimbabwe’s push for value addition and local manufacturing competitiveness.
