Nicaraguan Ambassador to Zimbabwe Ms Nadaske Cuthbert and Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo have toured Plot 6 at Triple and Pen Farm in Trelawney.

Ambassador Cuthbert said there will be increased cooperation between Zimbabwe and Nicaragua in supporting women in agriculture.

She said Zimbabwe and her country are both agriculture driven and could benefit from sharing experiences.

Minister Chombo hailed the Zimbabwe Women Agribusiness Network (ZWAN) for championing the empowerment of women in the agricultural sector.

Triple and Pen Farm is run by Mrs Maltina Mashava, who is supported by her husband Mr Charles Mashava. It is located in Mashonaland West Province.

Mrs Mashava grows maize and wheat, as well as livestock.

She said optimising production on a small area is proving to be effective in increasing yields.

“I have learnt from the extension workers that I can concentrate my effort on a small area to increase yields,” she said.

During the 2024 winter season, Mrs Mashava produced 30 tonnes of wheat on six hectares.

ZWAN executive director Ms Philips Jaya said women need support to contribute meaningfully to agricultural productivity in the country.

“Over the years women have demonstrated that they are the workhorses in our communities as far as agriculture is concerned. They can achieve so much by coming together,” she said.

Ms Jaya said the network seeks to raise female millionaires by 2030 through adoption of technology in farming and promoting irrigation.
