Zimbabwe prospect makes senior team debut

ENGLAND-born Zimbabwean starlet Tawanda Chirewa (20) made his Wolves senior team debut on Friday evening in a FA Cup third round fixture against Brentford.

He is in a growing list of Zimbabwe Warriors prospects coming to the fore in Europe. Game time may improve his chances of consideration and coming from a more competitive league that would be a big boost.

Chirewa has been training with the senior team in the last three months and has made match day squads in a number of matches this season.

On Friday night, he came on as a 90th minute substitute in a game that finished 1-1.

As per the tournament rules the two teams will now square off in a replay to determine who progresses to the next stage of the competition.

Chirewa becomes the latest Zimbabwean to make his senior debut this season.

Last month, Newcastle United forward Michael Ndiweni made his debut in the EPL, while Sheffield Wednesday’s Joey Phuthi had his first senior appearance for the club last week.

A few weeks ago, Chirewa was reportedly involved in an altercation with senior team defender Jonny Otto at training.

According to The Athletic, Otto swung an elbow towards Chirewa and also spat at a member of the coaching staff who tried to drag him away from the clash with the Warriors prospect during a training session at Compton Park in the week before the Arsenal game.

Chirewa was on the bench for the Arsenal game.

Before joining Wolves, at 16 years and 31 days, Chirewa became Ipswich Town’s second youngest first-team player when he made his debut in the EFL Trophy tie at Colchester in November 2019.

He signed his first professional contract with Ipswich Town in November 2020 when he was aged 17. — -@innocentskizoe
