The Zimbabwe School of Mines (ZSM) has issued an urgent warning to its students and staff following a troubling increase in illegal mining activities at a pit located in the New Parklands suburb of Bulawayo.

This surge has led to a spike in criminal activities, raising serious safety concerns for the community.
Reports indicate that illegal miners, commonly referred to as omakorokoza, have taken to the area, creating a chaotic environment.

The ZSM security department noted that these activities are not just a threat to the miners themselves but also pose risks to residents those passing by, including motorists and pedestrians. In a statement released to the ZSM community, officials highlighted the alarming rise in incidents of robbery and assault in the vicinity, particularly in

New Parklands and the neighboring Killarney area.

“These panners are posing a threat to passersby, both motorists and pedestrians,” the statement cautioned. ZSM is urging everyone to exercise extra caution, recommending that students and staff limit their movements around these areas.

They emphasized the importance of personal safety, advising against picking up passengers or stopping in suspicious areas.

“Always lock your car doors and close windows and avoid carrying large sums of money,” read part of the statement.
Moreover, the school has encouraged students and staff to opt for registered public transport rather than private vehicles, as safety continues to be a top priority.
