The Radiation Protection Authority of Zimbabwe (RPAZ) is currently holding a National Seminar on Non-Ionising Radiation (NIR) Safety in Bulawayo, under the theme “Strengthening Safety Standards, Understanding and Managing Non-Ionising Radiation Risks”.
Non-Ionising Radiation (NIR) is a form of electromagnetic radiation that is increasingly used in various sectors, including telecommunications, healthcare, power systems and industrial operations.
While NIR technologies offer many benefits, they also pose potential health risks if not properly managed. The RPAZ was established under the Radiation Protection Act 15:15 of 2004, and is responsible for regulating radiation safety in Zimbabwe.
The seminar aims to raise awareness, provide guidance on the management of non-ionising radiation safety for the relevant practice of high voltage, power systems radar technology, telecommunications industry and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in Medicine.
The Chairperson of the RPAZ Board Dr Anna Mary Nyakabau emphasised the importance of public safety while embracing technological advancement.
“This workshop marks a significant step in our country’s journey towards safeguarding public health while embracing the opportunities that technological advancement brings,” she said.
RPAZ Chief Executive Officer, Mr Justice Chipuru said the goals of the seminar also include raising awareness, assessing risks and managing safety risks associated with NIR technologies.
The seminar served as a platform for dialogue and knowledge exchange, ensuring Zimbabwe remains proactive in addressing emerging safety challenges and protecting people and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation, reinforcing the Authority’s mission and the importance of collective responsibility.
