Zimbabwe will remain actively engaged in multilateral efforts to uphold and defend the principles of the United Nations Charter and support multilateralism as the bedrock of global peace and sustainable development, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Deputy Minister Sheila Chikomo has said.

Deputy Minister Chikomo, who led the Zimbabwean delegation, made the remarks at last week’s third meeting of the national coordinators of the Group of Friends (GOF) in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations, held in Moscow, Russia.

In her remarks, she called on group members to reinforce unity and cohesion, focus on collective action against unilateral coercive measures and the imperative of reforming outdated structures of the United Nations.

“Zimbabwe reaffirmed its continued commitment to the principles and ideals that underpin the Group of Friends. We uphold our historic and moral commitment to the anti-colonial struggle, while calling for the full decolonisation of all remaining colonial territories, including Western Sahara.

“We also emphasised the illegitimacy and devastating impact of unilateral coercive measures developing countries, particularly Zimbabwe, and called for their immediate and unconditional removal,” Deputy Minister Chikomo said.

At the meeting, Zimbabwe supported the establishment of an International Day Against Unilateral Coercive Measures and condemned Israeli aggression in Gaza, while reiterating its support for a two-state solution as the only path to enduring peace.
