Zimbabwe Under-19 cricket teams victorious in India

THE national Under-19 cricket teams, men and women have produced good results in their tour of India where they are playing against different clubs in Mumbai.

On Monday, the boys team won their match against CFC Excellence by seven wickets while yesterday their female counterparts won by 17 runs against Omtex ICWC Cricket Institute to make it four consecutive wins. For the boys, the Monday win was a redemption having lost their match on Sunday by seven runs.

Zimbabwe Under-19 men’s cricket team in India

In the boys’ match, Zimbabwe bowled out their opponents for 85 runs in 37.2 overs and chased down the target in 19. 4 overs, finishing on 88-3 to take home victory. Captain Matthew Schonken, once again led from the front with ball in hand, taking three wickets for 11 runs in 6. 2 overs. Ronak Patel took three wickets as well in 10 overs conceding 21 runs.

In their chase, Sean Bennett top scored for Zimbabwe with 28 runs while Patel and Campbell MacMillan finished with an unbeaten 24 and 13 runs respectively to guide Zimbabwe through the finish line.

On the other side of Mumbai where the women’s team was playing on Monday Zimbabwe won by two wickets and followed it up with a 17 runs victory yesterday. In the match on Monday, Zimbabwe restricted their opponents, MCA Sachin Tendulkar Gymkhana to 115-3 in 20 overs and managed to reach their target with an over to go, finishing on 121-8.

Michelle Mavunga is the only bowler to have taken a wicket for Zimbabwe with the other two being run outs. With the bat, a splendid performance by captain, Kelis Ndhlovu was enough to see Zimbabwe through the finish line. Ndhlovu scored an unbeaten 63 runs off 49 deliveries.
In yesterday’s match against Omtex ICWC Cricket Institute, Zimbabwe were restricted to 80- 6 in 20 overs and they managed to defend the total, restricting the hosts to 63 all out to record a 17 runs win.

Ndhlovu once again, top scored with 23 runs and was supported by Vimbai Mutungwindu who chipped in with 18 runs on the board. With the ball in hand, Rukudzo Mwakayeni, Olinder Chare, Tawananyasha Marumani all took two wickets for the visitors as they bowled out the hosts.

Both Zimbabwean teams are using the tours as preparation for the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 World Cups where they got automatic qualification. – @brandon_malvin
