Zimbabwean employee working in Chinese companies: Creating a spirit of teamwork as work culture

Name: Alice Simango

Organisation: China Jiangsu International

Job title: Project Safety Officer

It is a great honor to work with China Jiangsu International E.T.C.C, as this is an opportunity for me to acquire knowledge on innovative technology and experience from the one of the largest international companies taking Zimbabwe to a whole new level. With the help of my Chinese colleagues and their confidence in me, I overcame the cultural differences between Zimbabwe and China creating a spirit of teamwork as our work culture.

Since 2014 when I joined this corporation I have grown in awe on the superb work ethics of this large international company which has African Development as one of its key drivers in carrying out major projects in the world. I have been a proud team member in building Victoria Falls international Terminal which commenced in the resort town of Victoria Falls in the year 2013 ending in 2016 and the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport Terminal in Harare the capital city of our country which is still underway and will help our country attract investment and promote the realization of the road and belt initiative.

The BRI  brings about great results for both China and the global economy and I am positive Zimbabwe is and will continue to develop together with China. China has accounted for about 30 percent of world economic growth. Through the rapid expansion of its demand for imports, China propels economic growth in the B&R countries that export goods to China. At the same time, China is making a growing contribution to international trade. Here in Zimbabwe we hope to learn from China’s excellent experience and practices. I also hope the two countries can carry out broader and deeper cooperation.

When I finished college in 2011 I wished to be part and parcel of the great developments being undertaken in Zimbabwe which are bringing new methods of doing things compared to our antiquated ways which we were used to little did I know what the future had in store for me. Being a team player at China Jiangsu International Economic Technical Cooperation I have become acquainted with my Chinese colleagues all around me, not leaving out the support and love they have. The greatest of all qualities I have experienced in this organization is their kindness to the local people and how our Management goes an extra mile to ensure employee training on new technology will leave most of Zimbabweans well skilled not forgetting the massive employment opportunities they have created to all locals.

The efforts made by the BRI to promote green and low-carbon infrastructure construction and operation management, fully taking into account the impact of construction on climate change are already one of the key implementations of China Jiangsu International Economic Technical Cooperation on its construction methodologies in the built environment. The call for sustainable construction resonates in all our daily activities with main thrust being out on our new engineering designs e.g. Robert Gabriel Mugabe Airport maintains sustainable energy consumption by using natural methods on lighting and ventilation.

I have attained a great deal of skill sets within my organization and I wish most of my fellow countrymen to benefit from the Road and Belt Initiative  in Zimbabwe as this will strengthen trade relations and in turn boost local economy to Zimbabwe.
