SOUTH AFRICA-BASED, Zimbabwean-born filmmaker Zoe Ramushu (née Chiriseri) continues to fly the national flag high, cementing her growing influence on the global film stage, after securing a second nomination at the prestigious Global Production Awards.
The Global Production Awards honour excellence in production, outstanding filming locations, and innovation in areas such as sustainable production and diversity. They serve as a key benchmark for the international film and television community. The awards are open to studios, production companies, film commissions, suppliers and other industry players shaping the future of screen production. This year’s ceremony is set to return to the Cannes Film Festival in France on May 19, 2025.
Reacting to the news, Zoe expressed her joy, describing the nomination as both surreal and affirming.
“This is the second time, but honestly, it still feels unreal to be recognised on such a global stage, among incredibly talented people. At the same time, it feels real and validating, because it shows that a little Black girl belongs in these spaces. These are the affirmations we constantly tell ourselves: that we deserve a seat at the table, that we deserve to walk the corridors of power.”
She emphasised that, for her, the nomination represents more than just personal achievement.
“It’s a manifestation of the dreams and affirmations of many young Black women around the world. It’s a calling and purpose placed by God. I hope it serves as an inspiration to those around me.”
This year’s nomination is linked to Zoe’s latest innovation, Wrapped App, a tech solution designed to streamline hiring, training, on boarding and payment processes within the film and television industries. Wrapped App has already gained significant traction, receiving funding from the MultiChoice Innovation Fund, a gesture Zoe described as particularly meaningful because it came from within the African continent.
“I’m especially excited because Wrapped, my app, was funded by MultiChoice. Having that support from home is heartwarming. Often, you’re celebrated abroad, at events like Berlinale EFM Startups or Microsoft Café, but nothing beats being recognised and embraced at home. This partnership with MultiChoice is exactly the explosive, strategic collaboration I always dreamed of.”
A writer, director, producer, and actress, Zoe’s career has been defined by ground-breaking achievements. Her production Intelligent/Botlhale was screened at the New York African Film Festival, while, To The Plate, was shortlisted for the Bafta Student Film Awards. She also co-directed, It Takes A Circus, a finalist at the 48th Student Academy Awards (Oscars).
Beyond her personal projects, Zoe was selected among Africa’s top 15 producers for the Realness Institute’s Creative Producer Indaba, a platform dedicated to nurturing leadership and entrepreneurial skills in African film-making. With her relentless drive and passion, Zoe Ramushu is not just making waves, she is carving out a legacy.
