FOOD and beverage lovers in Zimbabwe are in for a delectable treat on Saturday, (July 26) as UAE-based Zimbabwean sommelier Joe Mangena prepares to introduce the vibrant flavours of Mexican cuisine through an exciting cocktail masterclass.
Hosted at Beach House in Harare, this event will feature the renowned Felipe Guarjardo, a world-class bar manager with over a decade of experience in mixology.
Mangena, who recently celebrated his win as, “Beverage Manager of the Year” at the esteemed “Big Night Life Awards” in Dubai, sees this masterclass as a pivotal moment in his mission to revolutionise Zimbabwe’s culinary scene.
“I am thrilled to bring the essence of Mexican cuisine to Zimbabwe,” he stated during an interview from his base in Dubai.

“This masterclass is not just about cocktails; it’s about introducing a new cultural experience to our local food landscape.”
The “A Taste of Mexico Cocktail Masterclass” promises to be a captivating venture into the world of cocktails, guided by Guarjardo, whose experience includes extensive travel and deep knowledge of mezcal and tequila.
“Felipe is not only a master mixologist but also someone who brings flair and flamboyance to every drink he prepares. His passion for hospitality is infectious, and I cannot wait for the people of Zimbabwe to experience his artistry firsthand,” Mangena remarked.
This collaboration between Mangena and Guarjardo is set against a backdrop of cultural exchange and culinary innovation.
By introducing Mexican cocktails, Mangena aims to enhance the local food scene while fostering international relations between Zimbabwe and Mexico.
“I believe that food is a universal language, and by sharing these flavours, we enrich our cultural tapestry. It’s about creating a dialogue through food and drink,” he explained.
Mangena’s culinary journey has been remarkable. Last year, he hosted “A Taste of Argentina — Summer Edition,” which featured Argentine chefs Juan Pablo and Ierick Christensen showcasing their country’s authentic savours. This event spoke to Mangena’s commitment to diversifying Zimbabwe’s culinary offerings.

“I am inspired by the desire to enrich the cultural and culinary landscape of Zimbabwe. Every event I host is a step toward broadening our palates and introducing new experiences,” he noted.
At the recent Big Night Life Awards held at Hilton Dubai Al Habtoor City, Mangena’s achievements were recognised when he received the “Beverage Manager of the Year” award.
This accolade is a reflection of his dedication to excellence in the food and beverage industry. He is also known for leading Gohan, a restaurant that earned the “Favourite Japanese Restaurant” title at the What’s On Awards Dubai last year.
As the Director of Operations at Global Taste Kitchen, Mangena has curated exceptional culinary experiences across South Africa, Qatar, and the UAE.
His influence extends beyond cocktails, as he recently addressed sustainability in food and beverages at ProFood Armenia 2025, the largest food and beverage event in Armenia.
“Sustainability is crucial in today’s culinary world, and I am committed to promoting responsible practices in our industry,” he stated.
The upcoming cocktail masterclass is not just a chance to learn about mixology; it’s an opportunity to engage with the vibrant culture of Mexico.

Participants can expect to delve into the intricacies of cocktail crafting, from understanding the importance of quality ingredients to mastering the art of decorative garnishing. Guarjardo’s expertise will shine as he guides attendees through the process of creating cocktails that are not only delicious but visually stunning.
Mangena envisions this masterclass as a platform for culinary enthusiasts to broaden their horizons.
“We are living in a time where culinary exploration is more important than ever. By embracing international flavours, we can create a richer, more diverse food culture in Zimbabwe,” he emphasised.
