Zimbabweans living in Namibia have petitioned the US Embassy, calling for the immediate lifting of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe Citizens Against Sanctions chairperson Mr Arthur Makarutse said the sanctions, which have been in place since 2001 under the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZDERA), have caused significant economic hardships and are undermining the country’s infrastructure development.
He said the sanctions violate Zimbabwe’s sovereignty, restrict access to global financial institutions, and led to an economic loss of over $150 billion in 2023 alone.
The negative impact extends to healthcare, education, and public infrastructure.
