DEAT Capital’s Smart Township and Rural Opportunities Forum has brought in land experts who have unpacked land policies in relation to food security in Zimbabwe.
In his presentation, land development expert Professor Mandi Rukuni said the industrial revolution started with the agricultural revolution.
He said reduced cost of production is critical as this helps to produce competitive products, which are affordable to everyone.
Prof Rukuni said if food is accessible to everyone, people become innovative and develop ideas that can change the world.
“We only think that academic institutions can instill innovation in us, but what we need to be innovative is full stomach and have some extra money,” said Prof Rukuni.
He also raised issues on the growing number of people migrating from rural to urban areas saying that manufacturing is not viable, but people are looking for better services.
“Rural industrialisation is the answer,” he said.
Prof Rukuni said farmers need to produce for industry and there is a need for good relationship between farmers and industry.
